Into the gay '90s with class. The 1990 Women Only Calendar from Nur Dame Productions is a work of art one that both men and women will appreciate.

The calendar is stunningly photographed in black and white at locales in and around Los Angeles. The theme of the calendar is easily discernable as "Lesbians of the Gay '90s." The women in the photos are an attractive multi-racial mixture of feminine and masculine that subtle yin-yang so much a part of gay and lesbian culture.

The range of the photos from the campy, vampish movement-oriented cover to the quiet eroticism of December's entry includes high fashion, adventure, romance and sex. From the pastoral setting of two lovers and their horse to the provocative, contemplative woman sitting as her bureau, the quality of the women represented is matched only by the superb settings captured by photographer Robyn Flynn.

Report highlights anti-gay violence. A new report from the Center for Democratic Renewal (CDR) ties the rising tide of violence against gays and lesbians to far right and white supremacist organizations that are using anti-gay bigotry to attract new recruits.

The report is entitled Quarantines and Death: The Far Right's Homophobic Agenda. The 40-page monograph was written by CDR research director Leonard Zeskind and Mab Segrest, a long-time lesbian activist, who is currently director of research and publications for North Carolinians Against Racist and Religious Violence, based in Durham.

The Center for Democratic Renewal, formerly know as the National Anti-Klan Network, was founded 10 years ago as the nation's principal clearinghouse for information on community-based responses to hate group activity and bigoted violence.

Quarantines and Death examines such issues as why gay men and lesbians have been targeted by far right groups, the nature of homophobic violence, and the ideology of the new right and the far right regarding homosexuality, AIDS and civil rights.

The Center for Democratic Renewal is a non-profit organization with offices in Kansas City, Missouri, Seattle, Washington, and Atlanta, Georgia. The CDR implements programs of research, training, public education, community organizing and technical assistance to counter white supremacy, religious intolerance and homophobic violence.

Quarantines and Death is available for $5.00 (including postage and handling) from the Center for Democratic Renewal, P.O. Box 50469, Atlanta, Georgia, 30302. A discount of 15 percent is available on orders of 10 or more.

Although a 1987 law officially excludes HIV-positive foreign travelers from the United States, the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) agreed this spring to allow them to enter the U.S. briefly for limited purposes. NGRA's guide is designed to be useful both to attorneys and laypersons. The cost of the publication is $10 ($7 for NGRA members and cooperating attorneys) plus postage and is available from NGRA at 540 Castro Street, San Francisco, CA 94114.

New lesbian films on video. She Must Be Seeing Things and Virgin Machine, two major lesbian films, are now available for purchase on home video.

In She Must Be Seeing Things, by Sheila McLaughlin, the strength of a love affair between a lawyer and a filmmaker, is tested when the lawyer, after reading the filmmaker's diary, becomes suspicious and jealous. Her sexual obsession becomes so overwelming that, at one point. she disguises herself as a man and "shadows" her love. This film explores the dynamics of sex and sexuality, career and commitment, fidelity and companionship.

Virgin Machine, by German director Monika Trout, follows the progress of a young journalist who, initially intending to write a story, researches and tries to find romantic love in Hamburg. When her attempts seem fruitless and her "love" relationship become stagnant, she tries her luck in San Francisco, where the search becomes more personal. There she is introduced to San Francisco's lesbian scene, discovers her own sexuality, and, despite a minor setback, remains convinced that romantic love can be found.

Both videos are available through First Run Features, 153 Waverly Place, New York, NY 10014. ▼
